iPhone gets a mouse and keyboard

People really can do some interesting things with lots of spare time. The guys at BTstack project have come up with a way to control your iPhone using a keyboard and mouse, specifically the vitrual keyboard and the new mighty mouse. The iPhone is like a mini computer but this is just taking it to another level. I wonder if we will ever carry around our whole computer in the form of a mobile device and simply slot it into docking stations to do our work.

Well what ever the future hold this is quite a good video to watch.

Welcomed back by the cold

Feels good being back after I was away on holiday in South Africa on a farm in Northern Kwazulu-Natal. Now for those of you that don’t know the area, Kwazulu-Natal is known for it’s extreme humidity with the temperature reaching 37 degrees celsius while I was there. This said I loved it. I grew up in Kwazulu-Natal so I’m quite used to this and I loved every moment of it.

Now after getting back to London and having a bit of back to reality blues the cold weather the UK is experiencing has really taken me from one extreme to another. With temperatures falling down to -15 degrees celsius in some parts of the UK. Closer to home though the cold is showing and I thought a would give you a glimpse of how cold it is where I stay.

To cold for the birds

As you can see even the resident ducks and geese are not willing to be in the water in this cold. Below is the predictions for my area for the next 3 days.

It seems I’m in for a cold wakeup to reality.

The future of social media

I just watched this brilliant presentation by Gerd Leonhard on social media in the future. Watch it and let me know what you think of it.

What makes Google Chrome Fast (Technical Points)

Strait from the Chromium blog some videos where developers discuss why Chrome is so fast. I have been testing this over the last couple of days and really enjoy the speed that Chrome offers me. Have a look and let me know what you think.

Time Gadgets of the Year

Internet a legal right, Is this what the internet needs

Finland has become the first country in the world to make broadband internet access a legal right. This means that by next year July telecommunications companies will need to provide all Finnish residents with broadband lines that can run at speeds of at least 1 megabit per second.

Maybe this is something we need in the rest of the world to force development of one of the information ages most important tools. In quite a few countries where telecommunication providers started off as being state own development has been severely stifled by the creation of monopolies.

Some of the biggest sinners when it comes to this has definitely been African countries such as South Africa where most of the infrastructure is own by one company which use to be state owned.

This means that most telecommunication companies in this countries are forced to rent space on this infrastructure which is controlled by their competitor….

Maybe this legal right is just what countries like South Africa are in dire need of to help stimulate development. Let me know what your thoughts are.

GBoard – Will anyone use this?

I have to say it’s a novel idea and could either work or completely fail. The Gboard is a shortcut keyboard to help soften the learning curve associated with the 69 shortcuts for Gmail.

This said it’s the product was not created or dreamed up in a Google labs but rather was the brain child of Charlie Mason a film producer from Venice. The only stats I could find on the amount of Gmail users turn at around 50 million but this is for February 2007. I’m sure this has increased drastically which offers Charlie Mason quite a big target market.

This only has one problem a lot of the Gmail users have already gone through the process of learning all the shortcuts.

I have to say I’m a laptop guys and I don’t even like carrying a mouse with me so this will definitely not be the product for me but maybe it’s for you.

  • It’s cheap
  • Needs no extra software
  • Colour coded

  • Not extendable (New Gmail shortcuts won’t be supported)
  • Only use is Gmail

Google Adwords Ad Sitelinks

Once again Google has out done itself by implementing a simple feature that we all should have seen coming. Yes I’m talking about the Ad Sitelinks. I have been noticing them testing this on organic listing in search engine result pages for the last couple of months but paid little attention to it as it seem to come and go. As such there was no point targeting something that was not yet set to stay.

What are Ad Sitelinks? Well this is the ability to ad multiple links to a brands products on the same text ad. See screen shot below.Ad Sitelinks screenshot

What are the benefits of this you might ask? Well if you have keywords that describe multiple products you can now offer users links to all of these products. An example of this would be if you are a diving training center and your target keywords include “diving courses”. You could then add links to the different diving courses on the same text ad such as “Open Water Diver” , “Advanced Diver”, “Master Diver” etc. This will thus enable you to more accurately guide your users to find what they are looking for thus also increasing your click through and conversion rates.

This could also solve issues for companies that offer multiple products and weren’t able to advertise these product concurrently on their branded terms before. So if you take the ebay example above they will now be able to advertise multiple products on the branded search term “ebay”. Solving an issue that has long plagued Adwords.

There are some requirements that need to be met first though which might proof difficult to reach but will in essence keep this unique to adverts that are highly relevant.

  1. Your ad is in the first position above the search results
  2. Your ad has a substantially higher clickthrough rate than any other ad on the page
  3. Your Ad Sitelinks URLs direct users to pages that are part of your main website and allow users to navigate freely.

The proof is in the pudding and I have rolled this out on campaigns that this could be greatly beneficial for. Nothing else than to wait and see the effects this has.
